editorial guidelines for articles/reviews/news items
01. aims
Due to the diversity of contributions to the journal, a set of submission guidelines has been devised in order to ensure the editorial consistency of the publication. It is therefore imperative that all articles adhere to the following guidelines.
02. guidelines for articles
02.1 format
application: Microsoft Office Word
font: Times New Roman; font size 12 pt.
page numbering: Sequential
footnotes: Automatic numbering
paragraph: Left side alignment with double spacing, no indentation.
02.2 size
Should not exceed 5000 words or about 30 000 characters (including spaces).
02.3 language
We accept articles in Portuguese, Spanish, French and English.
02.4 title
Clear and concise in capital letters.
02.5 subtitle
Optional.
02.6 abstract
Abstracts to the articles should not exceed 155 words, or around 900 characters (including spaces), in Portuguese and, if possible, in English.
02.7 keywords
A maximum of 5 keywords should be included with the article.
02.8 short biography of the author(s)
• Full name
• Institutional affiliation
• Email (optional)
02.9 quotes
Must appear between quotation marks followed by an abbreviated author-date reference to the quoted work (see 02.10).
02.10 abbreviated system author-date
All references within the text will follow the Chicago abbreviated system (author’s surname date, page). For example (Grimal 1988, 65) or (Hauschildt and Arbeiter 1993,47). In case of more than two authors the use of et al is applicable, (Laumann et al. 1994, 262).
News articles, interviews and personal communications must appear in footnotes, rather than as abbreviated bibliographical references.
02.11 bibliography
All bibliography should abide by the following rules – examples:
• Monographs: Silva, José Custódio Vieira da. 2003. O Fascínio do Fim. Lisbon: Livros Horizonte.
• Articles published in journals: Moreira, Rafael. 1988. “D. Miguel da Silva e as origens da arquitectura do Renascimento em Portugal”. O Mundo da Arte. Revista de Arte, Arqueologia e Etnografia 2nd series, 1: 111-23.
In cases not considered by these examples, authors should consult the Chicago bibliographic style guide on www.chicagomanualofstyle.org
02.12 images
• Photos, drawings, tables, graphs and maps should be supplied either as a hard copy or scanned at 300 dpi’s (minimum), in jpg or tif format;
• Each digital image should be saved in a different file;
• All non-scanned images should be handed in as a hard copy, sequentially numbered and accompanied by the corresponding caption;
• The article text should refer to the exact location where the image is to be inserted in the following manner: fig. 1; fig. 2; etc.;
• A separate file should be supplied with a list of all the images, their respective captions and files containing the images.example: Fig. 1 > Amadeo de Sousa Cardoso – Pintura, 1913 (CAM-FCG) > Foto001.jpg
02.13 image credits
• Authors whose submitted work includes any material requiring third-party authorization, will be responsible for obtaining a written authorization for publication and for any costs that might arise from such an authorization.
• Credits should be given for each image as follows: author, date, copyright.
03. guidelines for reviews
03.1 reviewed work
• The work reviewed should be identified as follows: author, date of publication, title, place of publication and publisher.
• Citations from works other than the one reviewed should be included within the text.
03.2 size
Reviews should not exceed 1000 words (around 12 000 characters including spaces).
03.3 other rules
Reviews should follow the aforementioned guidelines, namely: 02.1, 02.3, 02.8.
04. guidelines for news items
Revista de História da Arte accepts the submission of news items on relevant subjects, such as exhibition critiques, project presentations or scholarly events.
04.1 size
News items will not exceed 500 words (around 6 500 characters including spaces).
04.2 other rules
• News items must not be accompanied by footnotes or bibliography. Any references, bibliographical or otherwise, must be included in the body of text.
• News items should follow the aforementioned guidelines, namely: 02.1, 02.3, 02.8, 02.12, 02.13.
05. author’s rights
Authors whose submitted work includes any material requiring third-party authorization, will be responsible for obtaining a written authorization forpublication and for any costs that might arise from such an authorization.
06. proofreading
Each author will receive a set of proofs of his or her article to confirm the final version of text and images to be published. No substantial alterations will be permitted at this stage. The final proofreading is entirely the responsibility of the Scientific Coordinator, who will guarantee that the reproduction of the text is faithful to the original.

08. selection and publication of articles/reviews/news items
08.1 All articles/reviews/news items submitted for publication in Revista de História da Arte will initially be sent to the Scientific Coordinator of the relevant issue, who will assess them for originality, relevance and scientific quality.
08.2 Articles selected for the themed section of the journal will undergo a double-blind peer-review process by two referees chosen by the Scientific Coordinator of the relevant issue. Authors will be required to prepare their work for the anonymous review process; in particular, they will be asked to remove from the text any reference to themselves or their own publications, as well as their identity in the ‘Properties’ tab of Word documents. Following this review process, authors will be notified as to the referees’ decision and will receive the relevant Appraisal Form (see Appendix 1). In the case of a positive assessment for publication, authors will be invited by the Scientific Coordinator to consider any suggestions included by referees in the Appraisal Form. Published articles will show the name of referees having given a positive assessment.
08.3 The Editorial Coordination team of Revista de História da Arte reserves the right to uniformize bibliographical references and introduce other formal alterations considered essential, provided that they do not change the meaning of the text.
08.4 The Board of Revista de História da Arte reserves the right to:
• reproduce the work on any media support
• place the work at the disposal of the academic community and others
• disseminate the work in various ways: digital networks, sites, etc...
• distribute copies of the work
08.5 Authors will be informed of the issue’s planned publication date within 60 days from the end of the selection process.

Revista de História da Arte is a peer-reviewed journal. Referees are invited to carefully read the information and observe the guidelines below.
01. Anonymity
• Papers submitted for publication in the themed section of Revista de História da Arte are subject to a peerreview process based on anonymity: the author’s identity is not revealed to referees, and vice-versa. Each paper is reviewed by two referees. If their appraisal differs, the final decision will be taken by the journal’s Scientific Coordinator or, if deemed necessary, the opinion of a third referee will be sought.
• Any published paper will show the names of the referees who have given it a positive appraisal.
02. Review and appraisal
• Referees will be invited to review the papers submitted to them by the Scientific Coordinator in order to assess whether they are fit for publication.
• Referee appraisals will have a solid basis according to the criteria set out in the Appraisal Form (Appendix 1).
• Referees are also encouraged to suggest improvements to the author, includingamendments or the further development of ideas or specific aspects which can significantly improve the author’s work.
• All fields in the Appraisal Form must be filled in. Once completed, the unsigned form must be sent by e-mail to the Scientific Coordinator within four weeks of the date in which the paper was submitted for review.
03. Final decision
• Appraisals must supply relevant information and arguments for the Scientific Coordinator to be able to justify his/her decision.
• The Scientific Coordinator of Revista de História da Arte will take on board the considerations made by referees.
• Notwithstanding the previous point, the final decision on whether and how a paper is to be published, will be the responsibility of each issue’s Scientific Coordinator.
